The Expert-Led Business Atlas

Find where expertise materially shapes the work.

Start with a field you recognize. Then test whether identifiable expertise shapes the whole business, one segment or workflow, or not enough of the value to establish the category.

Illustrative classification patterns · not a claim about every firm in a field

Five anti-dilution rules

  • Expertise must be part of the client, patient, investor, member or stakeholder value proposition.
  • A current expert contribution must matter; title, licensing, ownership, fame or founder aura is insufficient.
  • The contribution must be context-sensitive; competent standardized execution alone is insufficient.
  • The person or organization relying on the work must face a material loss without that contribution.
  • Classify the narrowest defensible scope.

Use the counterfactual

Ask whether the person or organization relying on the work would receive a materially equivalent outcome from competent generic service and good software without this particular person or team. If yes, reject the classification or narrow it. If the answer is unclear, record missing evidence rather than forcing inclusion.
